Britain's formidable strength in the pool was once again showcased at the 2017 Trials and British Championships. Taking silver in the 400m freestyle final on Day 1, Stephen's time was only 0.16s outside the personal best and Scottish record he set in Rio, and within both the consideration time for the year's FINA World Championships in Budapest and the nomination time set for Team Scotland for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Following his bronze in the 1500, he spoke frankly of his unhappiness with his race to Scottish Swimming's media representative, adding later that he had found it challenging to settle back into training in the first part of the season with different goals in mind from those he had before Rio.
