On the opening day of competition in Glasgow, Stephen slashed over 4 seconds off his personal best time in the 400m freestyle heats. Memorable images of that finish, with the Scotland 1, 2, 3 as Dan Wallace and Robbie Renwick followed him to the wall, brought the Scottish crowd to its feet.
"I would have loved an individual medal, of course I would, but I wasn't disappointed. I did my best and was really pleased with the improvement in my time"
A 12s improvement on his 1500m freestyle personal best in the heats in Glasgow earned him a place in the final, edging ever closer to the magic 15 minute mark. Another strong swim in the final the following day brought him home in 5th place at his first senior International games
"I was so proud to be there swimming with those guys. All the guys, the ones who gave us the chance with the heat swim too. It was fantastic to be part of the Glasgow Games and to win a medal for Scotland"
